2009 Janet Chang Memorial Scholarship Award

Objectives

 

The objectives of the “Janet Chang Memorial Scholarship Award” (JCMSA) are: (1) To provide encouragement and inspiration to young Taiwanese Americans who is either in the first year or in the second year in the medical school with excellent academic achievement, and involving in some community activities/services. (2) To memorialize Mrs. Janet Chang, the late beloved wife of Dr. Kenneth Chang.

 

Geographic Scope and Eligibility of Applicants

 

The Taiwanese American students currently enrolled in any medical schools will be eligible for applying this JCMSA.

The JCMSA recipients need to be present in person during the Award Ceremony to receive the scholarship award on May 29 (Friday), 2009, 8:00pm, at the Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center, Montgomery College, 51 Mannakee Street Rockville, MD 20850-1195.

 

The definition of “Taiwanese American (TA)” is either one or both parents/grandparents are originated from Taiwan, and their parents/grandparents and/or applicants often participated in the TA-community activities.

 

Selection Criteria

 

The JCMSA Committee will judge the applicants based on the following criteria:

     

l          Academic Achievement: 1st year student—50%; 2nd year student—60%;

l          Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score: 1st year student—20%; 2nd year student—10%;

l          Community Activities and Services participated (5%)

l          An Essay –“My Taiwanese Heritage.” (500 words or less) (25%)

 

Qualification & Application

 

(a)    All Taiwanese-Americans in the first year and second year medical school in the United States are eligible to apply. 

(b)   The application package will be sent to each applicant in the area upon request.  The application forms will be available through TCC web site (http://www.taiwanculturectr.org/scholarship/JCMSA/TCC_JanetChangMemorialScholarshipAppPkg.pdf ) and email upon request. The official email address for the request will be <TaiwanCultureCenter@yahoo.com>.

(c)    The deadline of application is April 22, 2009 (postmarked).

(d)   The award recipients will be informed by the first part of May 2009.

(e)    The award will be presented to the recipients at an award ceremony hosted by TCC.

(f)     The applicant shall provide a copy of the application form and each of the following documents:

·        One recommendation letter in a sealed envelope from the applicant’s instructor.

·        One official first year and second year medical school transcript (1st year student will provide only the first semester transcript), and a copy of the official Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score.

·        List of community activities and services that the applicant had participated in including the duration and frequency.

·        Resume including extra curricula activities.

·        A written essay of no more than 500 words on “My Taiwanese Heritage.”

 

The Award

 

There will be a plaque and the monetary amount of an award will be awarded to each recipient of the “Janet Chang Memorial Scholarship Award”.

The monetary amount of an award will be $1,000 each.
